Does a digital divide still exist?

Picciano (2011) stated that technology offers a lot of educational tools that can benefit student academics. But, does a digital divide still exist? I have been thinking about the text (Picciano, 2011) and wondering about that question. It seems so unfair for some students to have access to technology and others do not. Not only is it important for a district to provide the technology, it must also provide teachers who are familiar with technology and people to help with the technology also. It is quite an expense. But, well worth it to me. The school I am researching is considering the possibility of providing an iPad for every Middle/High student. So, my question is, "Are there schools that still do not have computers in the classrooms or computer labs?" Also, "Are teachers considering the fact that some students may not even have access to a computer at home?"

  1. Chris,

I've been talking with one local school district that is definitely doing iPads for all autistic students and maybe all junior/senior high students as well. They're biggest issue is figuring out how to ensure all students have at least some access to them after school hours. How exactly to get to fair, even though equal is likely impossible, is probably the next bridge to cross. I'm thinking libraries, since they're dying out in so many areas, should be partnering with schools and probably providing storage/access for tablet technology.

  2. Joe,
I think that would be a great idea. Do you know if students are allowed to stay after school at the school's library/media center?
