Picciano stated that "the Major applications of the internet are Global e-mail, discussion groups, live conferencing, file transfer, direct access to other computer systems, information navigation, and social networking..." (2008, p. 157). The Internet has changed many things in the world, including education. I am thankful for the applications mentioned. These applications have made keeping in touch with people much easier. E-mail has made communicating very easy. Discussion groups have been used to help people/students discuss certain topics in an easy format. Social networking has made the world much smaller and much easier to stay connected with people who are interested in similar things. The internet has also made distance learning much easier/better. There seems to be different views about education and social networking. I think that social networking can be a very good thing, just as I think education is very good. However, everything on social networking sites is not good. Everything at schools is not good. I have seen bad from teachers and students at schools. I have seen bad from people on social network sites. Schools are not bad. Social networks are not bad. People are bad and people do bad things. What do you think about social networking and education?

Social networking definitely has its good and bad points. For one, it allows us almost instantaneous communication with one another and also allows us to stay in touch with our friends and family and allows us to share things such as videos, pictures, stories, and the all important status updates. On the other hand there are the bad parts such as cyber bullying, inappropriate materials, and hackers. I agree with you as there are good and bad things about almost everything but our jobs as educators and leaders is to find the best way to use what we have.
ReplyDeleteI think that social networking in High School is a good Idea and supervised social networking middle school and in the elementary grades can work. It allows students to stay connected with each other, when they can not see each other. Students can share parts of their personal lives that they can not normally share in the classroom. They can stay connected during breaks. They can also interact social on an educational level that students have not be able to do before. I agree that the people that are bad online are also the people that are bad in person. I think if you give students the tools to handle bullies they will be better to protect them selves online and socially.

Social network has, in a sense, made the world smaller and definitely made communicating much easier.
Hopefully the "bad" will not ruin it for the "good"!
